Another day in Niigata at the Ikarashii household. The last day of our stay here with the divine Shinto Shrine. We went over to the tuition house (Alex's family lives at the ground floor of it). Bid farewell nad off we go.
Kensuke-san took the trouble to bring me to a kendo store just to let me get some more equipments, especially my dogi and hakama. The store keeper was really excited and all, he never heard of Brunei (not surprised) and was happy to know kendo reached all the way there. He's a high level black belt in the art thus I can understand his enthusiasm.
Hong and Kent Chung must be bored out, they went off to 7-eleven when I was looking around for the right equipments.
The petrols here were hellishly expensive.... few of our previous hosts joked that we should have brought fuel as gifts... ^^" tell me it isn't a sarcastic joke.
Well, not picture for this day, was having a hard time to look for our cameras. Do we really have to keep all these scenes in just our memories.
The children's playground was darn empty, we played there. Most likely people thought we were nuts I suppose. Then we went off to a nearby convenient store to get some snacks. Seems like we owned the streets, no ones on it.... too deserted in fact. Found the Final Fantasy Potion drink at the store, didn't expect to see it there. Wonder why am not excited when am always amazed back in Brunei when seeing new release of FF merchandise online.
Went to Mos Burger and treat the bros. Can't say why but I feel like I can eat those burgers for every meal here if I get to.
They went for a swim after that while I just stayed at home. Aunt and Kensuke-san was out for work.... wow... is this how a kid in Japanese society whose parents are always busy at work felt like.... I seriously felt how it is and thought maybe thats why their psychological states at the extreme cliff hangs are not by chance. Good thing theres NTT DoCoMo broadband, it kept me company, a bandwidth of DL speed at more than 2 Mbyte/s made my song downloads as fast as one click one song.....I can see how my folder floods up in mere minutes.... wonder when will Brunei has such service... I am in the countryside now for crying out loud, who knows how city speeds will be... beyond god like?!
The night wasn't much for munching on kuri (chestnut) and watch the old Tom Cruise movie Top Gun with him speaking Japanese.... wow.... we had to squeeze in the small living room and sleep under the table with heater for tomorrow, we are heading for the city... Tokyo.
How I wish I can stay in Niigata longer.
Oh... from what my hand written journal says.. I met a girl whose school uniform is almost identical as School rumble and guess what? she looks like the main female characteras well! Her eyes seems to be as cold and sharp as well, saw it because our eyes met.... Ya... another Japanese mini skirt in winter encounter it was.....
Japan... the expected treasure waiting to be hidden (pun to Brunei tourism slogan)

Day 10- 26th December Gaijin in the Far East
Today is the day we go SKIING!!! Well. . . sorta. . . um. . . falling?! Anyway, the drive to the resort takes 3 hours by car >D it was really troublesome for Ikarashi-san to take the trouble to bring us all the way there. I am grateful for the kindness.
Did I mention Ikarashi-san is a Shinto priest? But he's also a principal of an elemetary school in the rural areas where students amount to a max of 40 at best. But still, the school facilities are quite complete.
On the way to the elementary school for a short rest.
One of the fields outside the school, the dents on the snow are rabbit footprints =D
Ikarashi-san kindly showed us around the premise and we are to wear indoor slippers (yes, hygiene is a big issue to Japanese, fail to follow it and they may be offended). We had and urged to swim and we did, "Isn't the water freezing cold?" you might ask. We aren't afraid of freezing water >D coz there isn't any =3
We swam in snow >D just kidding.
Our instructor at the resort was late as he has to travel from Nagano all the way here, which takes him 2 hours (seems like Japanese don't mind long drives). Then again, too bad, he's a Canadian, Mr. Ian who married a Japanese early 2007 at the very same resort
All set and good to go.
The Chinese dumpling AD is seducing me. . .

Ian came to Japan for almost 2 decades ago, he said the best way to learn Japanese is to stay in a rural area with no one else you will blindly depend on and you'll be forced to adapt. That's how he got through actually. Now he's an English tutor at a JuKen/JuKu ( cram/tutoring school)
Knowing I want to take up further education in the Medical field, Ian started to talk about himself feeling the guilt of being a blacksheep as his brothers are doctors and he's the only one who came to Japan and became a teacher.
But hey, he did well in teaching and he's good at it, we got the hang of it in just one afternoon. And guess what, the poles were just decoration, we didn't bring it with us to the top of the slope, we purposely left it behind as Ian says "You guys wanna try without them or you wanna bring it along which is troublesome." We took the first option.
The slope of never ending. . . seems like it.

This picture here is the last one for that very day, man. . . batteries out of juice. OF ALL TIME!!! WHY NOW!!
After all the ski funs and stuff, we asked about the instructing fees, Ian declined the need of it and it seems that Ikarashi-san knows him quite well. Then comes the 3 hour drive back home again.
Dinner was the curry that still was left over from the other day,but still, the taste is great XD Went to the tuition spot once more, did crosswords with the kids and played the Dai-Hime card game once more.
Nothing much went on after that and another night spent at the old shrine of Hyaku San. Otsukaresama to the people who made our day and provided us hospitality.

Day 9- 25th December X'Mas!! Curry is House.... courtesy of eh.... some company in Japan
Cold wind sneaked into the room and froze me awake. Dang.. no wonder, the heater was off. Wait....Woke up late!! Oh no!! 11 am.... so rude to have slept till so late. Japanese may wake as late as 8 but mine was unforgivable.
The housewife still greeted the 3 of us politely, felt quite guilty as the foods were already prepared.
Sandwiches and the leftover okonomiyaki and takoyaki from the party. Even realise the tea wasn't cheap, adds more to my guilt. Didnt dare to make a sound, not even a word during breakfast.
Today we went shopping, at Apita... again. But this ones located somewhere else. Daniel want to check out more swimming gears for his fellow national teammates.
We saw a few funny stuffs in Apita, can't recall what were they. The main reason.... we forgot our camera 6(._. )*scratch head*
Head off to the Niigata museum. There was a mini exhibition about the old retro toys they used to have and so are old day animes and the really old films of it. Astro boy was one of them.
Then goes a spiral stair way all the way to the 3rd floor with its walls full of Niigata history up to the recent earthquake during mid year 2007.
even got to know how artificial snow makers work, and also the snow fall cases in Niigata. It was suppose to reach a height of 3~4 meters . And cases of electrocution (as villagers leave through the first floor and trip high voltage wires) happens.
But the snow thickness has drastically dropped over the years to 70~80cm max. Next to the museum is a food centre where traditional Niigata foods are sold.
We get to eat a green tea dango with red bean paste in it. Was really nice. And awkward enough, we are chinese and we ate chinese food before... we somehow ended up in a chinese restaurant ._.
Well, at least its a no shoe restaurant where u gotta take of your shoes at the front door. And theres a drink bar where if u order a drink, you get to refill anytypes of drink there. So is the salad bar XD
Got back to Haku San jinja and rest. Coz we got asked to follow to the tuition centre again.
This time we had a conversation with 3 high school kids in english. Most of them are just self introduction with QnA.
Played poker cards again which is the sign of one thing... Times up for the tuition to end. alex says the kids were pro in playing the japanese card game.... but the outcome was, Hong pawned them all, 4 in a row. i came in 3rd most of the time.
Got back home around 9.30 pm. To our surprice, miss Reiko (Ikarashi-san's sister) prepared curry.. Japanese Curry. It tasted so nice~ T_T I wanna eat again someday.
I remember I ate 5 plates of it... thick faced I was. Chatted with the Ikarashi till late night and still can feel the curry before falling asleep. And I just realised theres an altar next to our room. So soothing to look at it.

Day 8, 24th DEc 2007 Reminiscence.... or is it Dejavu
The day to leave the 2nd homestay. It was another unforgettable experience living with the Yamaya family. I still can't shake off the feeling that I had since the very day I land my eyes on the view of the country side of Niigata. I still don't know why am I not surprised or excited to unravel whats not seen in this foreign land of the East.
Took a picture with the pets before leaving. Wonder will I see them again the next time I pay a visit.

It ignored me!! I know I have what you don't la kitty. Don't jealous (he was once a boy... once)
Last glance at the neighbourhood from the balcony of my room.
Sorry guys, Myme is 40+ and has 2 college graduated son. What combat?! you thought she's 24?! you womanizer as always ==" your eyes ain't pro enough yet
(anyway, its the 2nd last photo with the Yamaya, the last one won't be obtainable until I return once more)
Got back to Uncle Kensuke's house again, but our things were long packed up and ready to roll, so we went around the neighbourhood once more. Only to find ourselves walking on a deserted walkway... such loneliness... got to the AM/PM store (its a name) bought a few stuff. Spotted a Final Fantasy potion in the shelves. Wow... now I know where the people on the streets went.. the 18+ corner of the convenient store book section ==" nah.. just 2 guys.
Next off is another homestay at a Japanese English tuition teacher's house. She once visited Brunei just like Myme, well, they visited Brunei together to be exact.
Before that, we went to a special place which we failed to go days before. A ramen shop. I know I did ate at Musashi, but this is different. When I entered the store, I realise there were so many kites decorating the place. This explains why Kensuke-san brought us to the kite fair the other day and he kept asking about kite. Most likely its his hobby since childhood.
Why has a ramen shop with kites gotta do with Kensuke-san you ask? well... that's why I said it's special. This is where Kensuke-san grew up, his childhood home. Now his sister is running the shop I suppose.
Ordered ChaSu Ramen as always. I still felt embarassed about the day I was there. The one who brought us our meal is none other than the owners daughter who is just a year younger than us. Well... don't know why but both of us got embarassed on eye contact. Must be due to the haze effect of the hot ramen!! Must be it >D!! (the author is not available for comment or a less bullshit excuse for the moment) ahem...
Well the pictures > (-o-)/ (=.=") < you changed the subject...sly
....Well...
Sorry, I couldn't take a picture of the daughter. She's a shinobi or ninja or something (true reason will not be revealed) ok i admit it ==" am shy ok. I know am a coward. Just spare me, please (,._.) I already got a lot of pressure when she kept looking when we left.
But seriously, the ramen was really nice. I doubt I'll go again though. Not because of the ramen.
Then we head off to the english tuition spot in Haku San (white mountain)
There we had a christmas eve party with the kids who tuitioned there as well!! And we met a russian who married a japanese wife there too ( he tutors english grammar). He's Alex.
Dang!! I just realise I didnt take a single shot of photo with the Ikarashis!! man... why... then thats it, I'll go bak to Japan once more, no photoes means i gotta meet them once more no matter what.
Note to photogenic selfpotraitors: Flash ain't always your best friend, and pimples are best unseen without one. Cheers.
Then we played 2 new types of card games. One japanese and one russian using poker cards. It seems almost like big 2 but more interesting, called Dai-Hime (the Commoner) although it literally means the poor citizens.
Went for Karaoke with them, and damn you Hong and Daniel ==" they pushed all the songs to me, and I ended up with a sore throat for 3 days starting this very day.
But the cool thing is, they had 3 bundles of catalogue for songs. Each is of a telephone book thick. And with choices of Japanese, Chinese, English and Korean songs. Sorry, no Indian and Malay la.. chi~
To call off the day, we went back to the Ikarachi's home.
Do I feel so weak when I reach there, not the body, its the mind. I can't help but feeling that I have been there. To top things off, I just had that stubborn decision to guess whats around me, all of em were correct.
A shrine next to the house, the trees and the garage. Man... I felt so depressed.
Forget about that, the Ikarashi owns the shrine, I never knew until then. Its called HakuSan Jinja (White Mountain Shrine)
The house is the most traditional one I have ever seen during my time here. But still I didn't fail to get to the spots in the house on my own.
We had to sleep with the gasoline heater over our head. But the cracks leaves entrance for the cold winds. I think I.... said Tadaima that night... not sure.
But at least there was a poster in the room to get Hong and Daniel occupied. The top model (also actors) of Japan calendar of 2008.

7th Day , 23 Dec 2007- Sloth
Woke up real late today... ate Brunch XD around 10 am ( pretty late for Japanese)
nice western style breakfast.. I really respect Japanese, every meal seems to be very well prepared.
But!! Today is really exciting, for we get to go to the mountains!! And whats that at this kind of year?!
YUKI DA!!! YUKI DAZO!!!! WOOHOO~ SNOW!!!
we got in for free!! (Myme-san's good friend knows the high ranks so.. yeah....)
instead of entry pass, we wore a PRESS PASS arm strap. (since when did i became a jounalist?!)
didnt get to skii... but!! Good thing i bought the right jacket >3 waterproof.. hehe.. so we just slide down steep slopes in turns.
OH!!! OH!!! just to say hi to those skiiers n snowboarders who pass by the slope, we made them a snowman XD with (YOKOSO!! WATASHI WA BRUNEI SNOWMAN DESU!!)
And I had to sacrifice my Sony player for the snowman T.T

After the fun with snow.. we went to Myme-san's friends house. Oddly... we were watching POC 1 (pirates of the carribean)
Then we had hamburger for dinner back home, which Yamaya-san had a function and Myme's another friend came over.
Kinda forgot how did the night went by but i remember playing the wooden 3D puzzles till late night.

Day 6 - Day of the Jesters, Me and Warner Bors.
What a morning, one last glance at our room which we had used for the past 4 days. Now well cleaned with futon folded. And the warm sunshine rarely seen in Niigata's winter days.
Which then Daniel's uncle came to pick us up. We had our last breakfast n last cup of coffee with To-san and Ka-san. Hopefully we'll meet again one day.
We left the house, having one last glance on the home which i felt awkwardly familiar but in reality yet so strange, I just cant help to feel as if am leaving home..
Gave To-san n Ka-san a hug n off we go.
We went for lunch before going to our next homestay. A local "Ayamku".. they have japanese styled fry chicken, not too oily and not too much flour on the chicken.. nice..
Then we went to the 100 yen shop... you guess it DAISO. Its only 1.50 BND not like the Brunei 3 BND.
They had tons of snacks n foods too. To give you a clear idea how big DAISO was, just imagine 1.5 times the size of THE MALL ground floor.
We then receive a call saying we'll be only going to the 2nd homestay in the late afternoon so we went back to Daniel's uncle's house to pack some of our stuff we bought the other day.
WE got so bored waiting, we went to the playground just across the street. The weather was too cold, no kids were playing there. Played the swing by standing on it. We sure are bored... ya...dude....
WE ARE LOST!!! AAAH!!! Uncle Kensuke couldn't find his way to Myme-san's house. T.T she's the mother of our 2nd homestay.
Good thing Myme-san came to pick us up at a nearby convenient store.
She looks younger than her actual age. And she seems to have cute actions at times ==" I cant believe she already has 2 sons who had done college.
The house is sure big, too damn big for only 2 people to live.
My room ( Daniel in the pic... he was complaining that my bed is softer than the one in their room... Hong slept on the bed while Daniel on solid floor in the same room)
View outside my room
theres 2 cats and one dog in the house (photoes to come) the cat is of human teenage but in terms of human time, its 70++ yrs old while the dog is around 80++ human years old. But theres a white cat which is just slightly younger, n WAS a boy... thats what the husband says (FYI he's a circuit board engineer, now u know where the house comes from)
We went for a movie at Warner Mycal- national Treasures 2 but thats not what i had a deep impression about... ITS BUGS BUNNYY!!! OMG!!.... he speaks japanese.... so are Daffy Duck n others... and advert is goddamn long...
after the movie, we went to TsuKiYa for GyuDon. I just dont understand why would Daniel n Hong order curry when its a GyuDon Ya where Gyudon are the best... not curry...
Then we got home, man... the house sure is warm. And we hanged out in Yamaya-san's work room for the whole night playing games on our own.

But... when we were asked what time we sleep, we said 12 am ~ 1 am?! then Myme-san was like "That early?!"
OMFG!! My mum would have killed me if i ever sleep that late at home.
My mind just kept flashing about warner mycal's Bug's Bunny speaking Japanese... thats just so... other worldly... just like.. Doraemon speaks english...
Which then Daniel's uncle came to pick us up. We had our last breakfast n last cup of coffee with To-san and Ka-san. Hopefully we'll meet again one day.

Day 5 - Reminiscence with the elders.
Today, we went to an activity centre for the middle age. We joined an IGO session with the elderlies.
Funny thing is... we dunno Japanese n they dunno much English so u know hows the scene like when we communicate plus gestures XD
but at least we made their day. Then Ka-san picked us up ( she left us just now for medical appointment FYI)
then she said the elders was really happy we visited n shared about Brunei with em n wanted us to visit on the same time the next week. But sad enough, we will be heading for Tokyo on that day.
Then we went to Royal Host restaurant for lunch.. ah... the Drink Bar.. where u order a drink for 150 yen n u get to drink all u like by refilling any drink at the Drink bar corner of the restaurant.
As Daniel wished, we went to a local swimming pool for a swim. Which we were picked up by To-san afterwards.
After the swim, we had to wait at the pool lobby... after washing our body more than 5 times. And out of my mind, I thought I was still in Bru, I wore a t-shirt and bought an ice cream out of the vending machine.
When To-san arrived, I cant help to noticed this cute school uniformed Japanese girl coz...coz... she's staring me with a "OMG" kind of face for quite a while since I sat down beside the vending machine. I know I look good >3 (as if ==")
So I asked Daniel whats wrong with her, then this is what he says " Its freezing 3 degrees Cdlcius, you ate an ice cream and wore a T-shirt".. owh.... OWH~
We were invited by Ka-san's friend who is an Indonesian professor to Niigata University for the International Performance night made by foreign students who study in Niigata U.

Guess what I digged out from the students there, there was once a Bruneian who studied there but has graduated a year or 2.
We then went to a traditional Japanese restaurant named Fu Sen. The meal is quite fairly priced but the taste kicks ass >3
Its the last day for homestay so we talked for the most of the night. Received a present from them, To-san's ShoDo caligraphy of our chosen words.
To-san plays the flute again while Ka-san plays the piano. One last time for me, the song, 千の風になって "Sen no Kaze ninatte "- I am a thousand wind.
